RULE #1 | GET GOOD LIGHTING
Yes, obvious, but the first rule of selfie-ing is to pay attention to lighting. You need good, natural lighting. Light is without doubt the best beauty product you don’t pay for. Don’t face your computer screen or television, turn toward a window with natural light. Or better yet, take it outside and bask in the sun’s glow. Great lighting can actually make under eye circles and shadows totally disappear.
Shooting inside? Find a window with nice, natural sunlight streaming in. Also, take a piece of white paper and hold it underneath your chin. This creates a natural bounce of light, illuminating the face, while reducing the double-chin effect.
RULE #2 | AVOID SHADOWS
When in doubt, face directly into or away from the sun. If it’s the middle of the day and the sun is high, the shadows can look like bags under your eyes. The golden hour to shoot a photo is during sunrise or sunset, when the light is low and the most beautiful- aim to shoot then if at all possible.
RULE #3 | KNOW WHEN TO USE FLASH
Whether you’re in a club or bar or just on your couch watching Netflix, how do you get a great selfie in little to no light? Turn to Snapchat! The social app has a flash feature for the front-facing camera (In the app, hit the little lightning bolt on the top left corner and then take your selfie. The screen will burst bright white light on your face.)
RULE #4 | PREP IS KEY
Get your look down. A selfie will show off your makeup more than you know. Choose products like Madison Berry Bold that are formulated with professional grade ingredients with professional use in mind.
RULE #5 | SMILE LIKE YOU MEAN IT
Flash a real smile and no snap will look bad. Don’t contort your face into a grin that’s too big or forced. Natural smiles are ALWAYS best. Going for slightly more serious selfie? Try smiling with your eyes.Practice in front of the mirror until you get it right- it’s easier than you think!
RULE #6 | PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT
Take selfies. A lot of selfies. Try tilting your head in different directions and changing the angles up slightly between each shot so there’s a wide variety to choose from. PLUS- don’t forget to make sure the camera’s focused before snapping away.
